The scar-care guide

How a scar finally looks depends not just on surgery but on the months of healing afterwards — and much of that is in your hands. Here is a practical, evidence-informed routine from day one through full maturity.

A timeline you can follow

Consistency over months matters more than any single product. These are the phases and what to do in each.

Days 0–14

While the wound is closing

Keep the area clean, follow your dressing instructions, and don't pick at scabs or peel tape early. Avoid tension — no heavy lifting or stretching that pulls on the wound. Watch for signs of infection and report them promptly.

Weeks 2–3

Start silicone once fully healed

As soon as the wound is completely closed with no scabs or open areas, begin silicone gel or sheets on clean, dry skin. This is the best-supported at-home step for keeping a scar flat and pale.

Weeks 3–12

Silicone, massage & sun protection

Use silicone daily. Once cleared, gently massage the scar for a few minutes once or twice a day to keep it soft. Protect it from the sun with cover or high-SPF sunscreen — new scars darken permanently in UV light.

Months 3–12

Let it mature

The scar keeps flattening and fading for months. Continue silicone and sun protection until it settles. Most visible improvement happens in the first 6–12 months.

12+ months

Review & refine

The scar is now mature. If it is still wide, raised or tethered despite good care, this is the right time to discuss revision — or laser to refine colour and texture.

Silicone is the foundation

Topical silicone — gel for the face and joints, sheets for flat covered areas — is the most evidence-backed at-home scar treatment. Start once the wound is fully closed and use it daily for at least 8–12 weeks.

Protect from the sun

New scars burn and darken easily, and UV discolouration can be permanent. Keep the scar covered or use high-SPF sunscreen for at least 12 months.

Avoid tension & massage gently

Limit stretching and heavy lifting while the wound closes — tension causes wide scars. Once cleared, gently massage the scar daily to keep it soft and prevent tethering.

Do & don't

Simple rules that make a difference

Do

  • Start silicone once fully healed and use it daily.
  • Protect the scar from the sun for a year.
  • Massage gently once your surgeon clears it.
  • Give the scar the full 6–12 month maturing window.

Don't

  • Apply products to an open or scabbed wound.
  • Expose a new scar to the sun unprotected.
  • Rely on vitamin E or "miracle" creams — weak evidence.
  • Judge the scar too early or pick at it.
